The joyful patterns and colors of washi tape nod to traditional, Japanese washi paper. Washi tape, introduced in 2006, has been popularized in the United States for its use in scrapbooking and journaling. Using washi tape as an art medium is new to the art world, but tape art has been around since the 1960s. Artist Melody Maleitzke will demonstrate her unique techniques creating art with washi tape. Students will use scissor-cut and hand-torn washi tape to create a cherry blossom branch artwork.
Artist Bio:
Melody is a Bainbridge Island based artist who specializes in mixed media collage using washi tape as her main medium. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas. Her works have won awards and have been featured in newspapers and magazine publications. Melody approaches her subject matter with the Zen-influenced “art of letting go.” By using washi tape, her ephemeral art changes with the lighting, the angle, and over time gives into the truth that nothing is permanent. It is through this knowledge of impermanence that she explores the interconnectedness of all life. She tends to hide messages in her works to draw viewers closer, to question its meaning, relationship to the image, and to discover connection.
This workshop has been developed alongside the Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper exhibition, featuring 9 contemporary artists who have pushed washi beyond its traditional uses to create highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations.
